“Say that again.”

“Yeah, can you believe that shit?” I push the sleeves up on my shirt and walk to the end of the sidewalk while I share my news with Troy. “The lady here has been super nice, though. She put me in touch with another place and it’s a little more than I want to pay, but the guy said he’d help me out by giving me extra time for the deposit.”

“What’s the catch? Why do I get the feeling you’re not telling me the whole story?” Troy asks.

“The tenants that are living there now aren’t leaving until the end of the month.”

“So, you’re looking at four weeks before you can move in?”

“Or longer. Depends on how much work needs to be done to the place.”

“Fuck!”

“Tell me about it.” I blow out a deep breath. Frustrated doesn’t even come close to describing the way I feel right now. “At this point, I don’t have any other options. I’m going to call Royce McMurray next and see if they’ll allow a little more time before I’m supposed to start. It’s not like I planned for any of this to happen. And if they say no, then I guess I’ll come back home.”

“No, dude. Don’t think that way.”

“Well, I can’t just sit around and do nothing. I don’t exactly have anywhere to sit.” I chuckle at my own comment. “I’m going to see if I can get a room somewhere for the night—hopefully, some place cheap—and I’ll start fresh tomorrow.”

“Let me call Gina. If nothing else, maybe you can crash at her place.”

I sit down on the edge of the sidewalk and wait for Troy to call me back. It would certainly be nice to stay at Gina’s, maybe even for a couple of days, but I don’t want to get my hopes up. I should’ve realized that getting my own place so easily and so quickly was too good to be true.

I swipe my finger across the phone screen as soon as Troy’s name appears. “Hey, what did you find out?”

“I sent you a text with her address and passcode to get inside. She said to make yourself at home, but don’t touch the leftover lasagna in the fridge. She should be home around six.”

“This is such a relief. Man, I owe you one.” I’m not an emotional kind of guy, but if Troy were here right now, I’d probably reach over and hug him…then slap him on the shoulder before anyone noticed.

“Just give my sister a hug for me and tell her I miss her. Then keep your paws off of her.”

“Excuse me?” I know Troy is giving me a hard time, but does he really think I’d do anything more than that? He’s known me for a long time and Gina…she’s far from my type.

“You heard me.”

“Yeah, okay.”

Gina’s place is really nice and I’m envious that she does it solo. The place certainly has a woman’s touch—the cute throw pillows on the sofa, the trendy wall art in the entryway, the patterned rug in the living room.
